    Three-dimensional viscous steady streaming in a rectangular channel past a cylinder

    We consider viscous steady streaming induced by oscillatory flow past a cylinder between two plates, where the cylinder's axis is normal to the plates. While this phenomenon was first studied in the 1930s, it has received renewed interest recently for possible applications in particle manipulations and non-Newtonian flows. The flow is driven at the ends of the channel by the boundary condition which is a series solution of the oscillating flow problem in a rectangular channel in the absence of a cylinder. We use a combination of Fourier series and an asymptotic expansion to study the confinement effects for steady-streaming. The Fourier series in time naturally simplifies to a finite series. In contrast, it is necessary to truncate the Fourier series in z, which is in the direction of the axis of the cylinder, to solve numerically. The successive equations for the Fourier coefficients resulting from the asymptotic expansion are then solved numerically using finite element methods. We use our model to evaluate how steady streaming depends on the domain width and distance from the cylinder to the outer walls, including the possible breaking of the four-fold symmetry due to the domain shape. We utilize the tangential steady-streaming velocity along the radial chord at an angle of pi/4 to analyze our solutions over an extensive range of oscillating frequencies and multiple levels in the z-direction. Finally, higher-order solutions are computed and an asymptotic correction to steady streaming is included.Comment: 25 pages, 14 figure

    Investigating the Establishment and Sustainability of Professional Learning Communities in Rural East Texas: The Principals\u27 Perspectives

    The role of principals, especially in rural schools, where educational outcomes fall below the national average, is significant in implementing changes in the school. The focus of this qualitative study was to explore factors that principals deem most crucial to establishing and maintaining Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Moreover, elements linked to how principals perceive the practicality of developing and supporting PLCs in rural schools were examined. The researcher conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with principals to determine their perceptions about attributes most important in establishing PLCs. Seven principals with a minimum number of 3 years in the position were included in the study. Findings indicated that buy-in from teachers and mutual trusts were substantial factors influencing the leadership component of PLCs in rural schools. As the researchers concluded, principals must intentionally facilitate connecting the PLC framework using professional development to affect organizational change and subsequently impact campus learning

    Improving the FAIRness of Australia’s grains research sector data

    Across Australia’s arable landscapes, thousands of crop trials have been conducted to improve the profitability and sustainability of Australian grain production. Although there have been significant steps to make knowledge gained from trials available to users, there is the potential to further support the development of next generation data models and knowledge products by integrating trials from disparatei sources by adhering to FAIR principles of data management. That is, making data: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. This research explores whether Online Farm Trials increase the FAIRness of agricultural grains trial datasets through a comparison of the trial data capture and handling practices of organisations whose datasets are not discoverable through Online Farm Trials (OFT) (N = 50) with the FAIRness of the datasets discoverable through OFT. The findings demonstrate that OFT is helping to make the results of Australia’s grains trials more FAIR to the users of trial data, and suggests a number of improvements to the FAIRness of trial datasets, foremost through the use of machine-readable metadata

    Singular moduli for a distinguished non-holomorphic modular function

    Here we study the integrality properties of singular moduli of a special non-holomorphic function Îł(z) which was previously studied by Siegel [10], Masser [8], Bruinier, Sutherland, and Ono [3]. Similar to the modular j-invariant, Îł has algebraic values at any CM-point. We show that primes dividing the denominators of these values must have absolute value less than that of the discriminant and are not split in the corresponding quadratic field. Moreover we give a bound for the size of the denominator

    This research effort examined the current advanced battery requirement (baseline) and projects anticipated battery requirements for the operating force in 2035 and 2045. The research is conducted using a mission engineering perspective to determine the battery requirements. The analysis includes battery chemistry, energy density, charge/discharge rate, safety concerns, and the like, of the battery. In this research the following questions are answered: What is the current advanced battery requirement (baseline)? What is the projection for batteries required by the operating force by 2035? What is the projection for batteries required by the operating force by 2045? Upon completion of the research, the team was able to definitively determine that there will be a role for Li-ion batteries within the fleet of Navy vessels. That role will, however, be limited to running specific subsystems or equipment and will not replace the ship generators.     Deconstructing density: strategic dilemmas confronting the post-Apartheid city

    Public authorities in many countries around the world are seeking to raise urban densities. Residential densification is particularly important in South Africa because of the colonial and apartheid legacy of sprawling, fragmented, racially divided cities. The paper examines the case for densifying central Cape Town and provides a framework to help deconstruct the concept and explore the policy challenges faced. It focuses on the bold aim to treble the area’s population within 10 years, and identifies issues where further consideration and public debate are required for how this can be achieved in a way that is desirable, affordable and fair. A key message is the need to understand both the composition of demand for central city living and the challenges involved in supplying suitable housing and amenities at higher densities. The level of social inequality in the city poses greater complications than elsewhere

    The Casiquiare river acts as a corridor between the Amazonas and Orinoco river basins: biogeographic analysis of the genus Cichla

    The Casiquiare River is a unique biogeographic corridor between the Orinoco and Amazonas basins. We investigated the importance of this connection for Neotropical fishes using peacock cichlids ( Cichla spp.) as a model system. We tested whether the Casiquiare provides a conduit for gene flow between contemporary populations, and investigated the origin of biogeographic distributions that span the Casiquiare. Using sequences from the mitochondrial control region of three focal species ( C. temensis , C. monoculus , and C. orinocensis ) whose distributions include the Amazonas, Orinoco, and Casiquiare, we constructed maximum likelihood phylograms of haplotypes and analyzed the populations under an isolation-with-migration coalescent model. Our analyses suggest that populations of all three species have experienced some degree of gene flow via the Casiquiare. We also generated a mitochondrial genealogy of all Cichla species using >2000 bp and performed a dispersal-vicariance analysis (DIVA) to reconstruct the historical biogeography of the genus. This analysis, when combined with the intraspecific results, supports two instances of dispersal from the Amazonas to the Orinoco.     Multiple Levels of Lumbar Spondylolysis - A Case Report -

    We report here on an unusual case of multiple levels of asymmetric lumbar spondylolysis in a 19-year-old woman. The patient had severe low back pain of increasing intensity with lumbar instability, which was evident on the dynamic radiographs. MRI demonstrated the presence of abnormalities and the three dimensional CT scan revealed asymmetric complete spondylolysis at the left L2, L3 and L4 levels and the right L1, L2 and L3 levels. This case was treated surgically by posterior and posterolateral fusion at L2-3-4 with intersegmental fixation using pedicle screws and an auto iliac bone graft. The patient was relieved of her low back pain after the surgery
